Karolinska Institutet – Stockholm, Sweden

One of Europe's most prestigious medical schools, Karolinska Institutet and the Feinberg School of Medicine have an agreement that allows fourth-year medical students to apply for English-language rotations in surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, infectious disease, venereology/dermatology, neurology, oncology, pediatrics and psychiatry, among others. Independent medical research projects are possible.

  • How to apply: Complete the online application; Northwestern may send four medical students each year, but they must apply by May 1 for the autumn semester (September-December) and October 15 for the spring semester (January – July)of their M3 year

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical research institutions with a strong emphasis on global health issues and strategic alliances with important European associations, including the League of European Research Universities and a network of 12 research intensive universities that promotes the work of young scientists in Europe. Karolinska Institutet and the Feinberg School of Medicine have a bilateral agreement that allows two medical students from each institution to complete four-week rotations at the partner school. Karolinska Institutet has a wide range of rotations available at various times of the year. Independent research projects by medical students, fellows and residents may also be possible.

Accommodations

Housing is available is Karolinska's international student dormitory. Karolinska Institutet offers international students housing in their dormitories that are attached to their main teaching hospital. The facilities offer free wireless and a unique community of international students. Otherwise, the facilities are basic dorms with small private bedrooms and shared common areas. The approximate cost for a dormitory is approximately $550-750 USD, while off-campus apartments tend to range from $1,000-1,200. Dorm availability can be limited.
