Global Health Project Award Funding for Faculty

The Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health is pleased to share this call for applications to supporting member faculty projects, including, but not limited to, events, education, community engagement, or implementation projects. These funds are not intended to support research projects. Those interested in research awards should instead apply for Research Catalyzer Funding for Faculty.

Eligibility

Global Health Project Award

The purpose of the Global Health Project Award grant is to provide support to Northwestern faculty for non-research projects, including, but not limited to, events, education, community engagement, or implementation projects. The fund is not meant to support the same aims of existing projects already funded elsewhere. Priority will be given to supporting long-term partnerships for projects that will have long-term outcomes and impact.

COVID-19 Project Award

For all COVID-19 Project Award applications, award topics must be directly related to the treatment, diagnosis, monitoring, prevention or modelling of COVID-19 disease. Special awards will be made for CoVAXCEN themed projects.

Primary Care Project Award

For all Primary Care Project Award applications, award topics must be focused on improving primary care globally.

All applicants must have a full-time appointment at Northwestern University and be a member of the Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health. Note, a final report will be due to the Director of the Havey Institute for Global Health 60 days after the end of the event or project.

Budget

Total budget cannot exceed $25,000 regardless of length of budget period, including all subcontractor costs and indirect expenses to subcontractors. F&A to Northwestern is not allowable. Requests may be made for less than $25k.

Deadlines 

Annual application deadlines are October 1, February 1 and June 1 by 5 p.m. CST. There is a rolling deadline for all Primary Care and COVID-19 focused award applications.

Review Process and Notification

All eligible applications will be peer-reviewed. Notification of a decision will be sent within 45 days of submission. Review criteria will include needs assessment, impact for Northwestern global health community, sustainability, and applicant qualification.

Application Materials

To complete this application, you will need to be prepared to upload the following material. See attached PDF here for Application Checklist.

1. Abstract (500 words max)

2. Project plan (PDF format required, up to 6 pages)

  • Aims

  • Background/significance

  • Innovation

  • Approach

  • Timeline and anticipated challenges

  • Track record of collaboration with partner institution

3. Budget (PDF or Excel format) 

Budget may include the following direct expense categories: salary, fringe benefits, medical & lab supplies, equipment, travel, meeting expenses, IRB expenses, patient incentives, laboratory services, books, conference fees, publication expenses. Unallowable expenses include computers and F&A to Northwestern.

4. Budget justification (PDF format required)

If the study involves human subjects research, include IRB determination.

6. Letters of support (2 required, up to 5. Combined as 1 PDF file)

It is required that an institutional letter of support come from the LMIC institution where the research will be conducted as well as from the NU PI's division chief and/or department chair.

For any education related projects, a letter of support should be included from the Center for Global Health Education leadership. Please email your request to Sara Caudillo (sara.caudillo@northwestern.edu) 1-month prior to application deadline.

7. NIH style biosketches or curriculum vitae for key personnel

Receipt of Award

Upon receipt of award, you will need to be prepared to submit a progress report at 10 months.

Award Completion

Upon completion of the award, you will need to:

  • Complete a Work-in-Progress presentation to Havey Institute for Global Health faculty and staff.

  • Submit a final report 30 days after the end of the event or project.
