Global Health Online Curriculum
First, Do No Harm: A Qualitative Research Documentary from Tim Holland on Vimeo.
The Center for Global Health thanks Ashti Doobay-Persaud, MD from the Section of Global Health in the Division of Hospital Medicine for compiling the information in this curriculum. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dr. Doobay-Persaud.
This curriculum is a compilation of online lectures relating to global health. This is intended to be used as an educational resource for physicians volunteering abroad and to precept students during global health rotations. Many of the following lectures, topics and resources are specific to Hillside Healthcare International in Belize, however, these tools have been developed for anyone participating in a volunteer program in resource-limited settings. There is also information about evaluating other potential overseas clinical partners for quality and sustainability if you are considering working at other sites. A region-specific curriculum is also recommended to prepare you for your experience.
Numerous online courses have been developed for both faculty and students to provide global health training resources. The curriculum below is a compilation of selected modules from various sites with specific comments as to which slides and lectures are most useful. The introduction (Section 1) and the cultural competency section (Section 5) are recommended for everyone and if you are participating in the Hillside program, the HHCI specific lectures as well as review of the core curriculum competencies are required. Although the layout is in didactic format, most of the salient learning points can be appreciated on the way home from clinic or when sitting on the porch spending time with the students while they are preparing dinner. There are some core teaching/talking points that have been outlined on the Belize page for faculty moderation, we would encourage all educators to review this document as it will provide the framework for teaching.
