Fourth year medical students may participate in clinical rotations at Université de Strasbourg (UDS), one of Europe’s best research universities, located in picturesque Alsace across the Rhine River from Germany.

Dates:  Various

Length of Rotation: Four to eight weeks

Location: Strasbourg, France

Language Requirement: French preferred but not required

Student level: M4s

Rotation Areas: Pulmonary medicine, pathology, radiology, thoracic surgery, pulmonary function lab

Rotation Details:
Previous FSM students have completed rotations at Nouveau Hôpital Civil, the University of Strasbourg teaching hospital. While in Strasbourg students completing rotations in pulmonary medicine may gain experience reading chest radiographs and CT scans, assist on procedures such as arterial blood gas tests, and observe patients treated for lung cancer and tuberculosis. Students have also completed rotations in interventional Radiology, pathology, and thoracic surgery. Patients speak mostly French, some German, and a few speak Alsatian, a local German dialect, while most doctors speak English as well as French. A typical rotation will begin at 8:30AM and run until approximately 2:30PM, Monday through Friday, and French medical staff and students dress casually during rotations.

Accommodations
Strasbourg, as described by a previous FSM student, is a “stunningly beautiful city” and travel to other parts of France and Germany is done by high speed train and is very easy and accessible. The university provided housing is basic. Each single occupancy room comes with linens and blankets, a small desk, shelves and closet. Generally, bathrooms are shared by other students and located down the hall. The price is affordable, and generally cost 150-300 Euros per month.
