Pre-Departure Preparation
Thorough pre-departure preparation is essential to having a safe and enriching global health education experience. The Center for Global Health’s orientation process provides resources and information to students and residents on issues such as global health ethics, personal health and safety, professionalism, and cross-cultural competencies, among others. There are many opportunities for medical trainees to prepare on their own time and the Center for Global Health encourages FSM students to review the online resources listed below.

Pre-departure Preparation Meetings
- Global Health Seminar Series - Students are expected to attend any three of the six seminar meetings, which run September through December.
- Small group discussion with recent FSM alumni of global health programs with site-specific information and Q&A. We will also focus on ethics and global health as well as personal health and safety.
Online Orientation Tool 2.0
FSM students may prepare on their own time and learn about entry requirements for specific countries, visas, personal health, travel medicine clinics around Chicago, FSM policies, funding, etc.
Global Health Seminar Series 2012
The global health seminar series sponsored by the Center for Global Health will be open to all FSM students and faculty but participation is required of all medical students who will complete an away-rotation or other global health project in ’12-’13. The seminar is organized to offer a broad range of engaging lectures and discussion on relevant global health topics from experts in the FSM community and the schedule is designed to offer flexibility to medical students who are expected to attend three of the six seminar sessions.

Global Health Education Consortium
The Global Health Education Consortium (GHEC) initiated their teaching module web project with the central objective of improving the quality and efficiency of global health education. We seek to do this by providing high quality modules on a wide variety of topics which students can review either on their own or in instructor-led courses. By being assigned in advance of class session modules can reduce time spent in lectures, thus allowing class time to be used more productively in discussions, review of case studies, problem-solving, etc. Almost 100 modules are available online on diverse topics ranging from global health policy, health systems, infectious and non-communicable diseases, vulnerable populations, and working in resource-limited countries.
Johns Hopkins Berhman Institute of Bioethics: Ethical Challenges in Short-Term Global Health Training
This series of cases introduces trainees and others involved in global health research and service to ethical issues that may arise during short-term training experiences abroad. Being able to recognize and navigate these issues is critical for avoiding harm to communities as well as facilitating a long-term, productive collaboration for the betterment of global health (1). The Working Group on Ethics Guidelines for Global Health Training (WEIGHT) has recently published best practice guidelines for this setting (2).
Using ten cases adapted from real-world experiences, this series builds on the WEIGHT guidelines and helps users identify and develop strategies for navigating some of these ethical issues. Although based on true scenarios, many details, including names and locales, have been changed to protect individual and institutional privacy and to assist in meeting educational objectives.
Unite for Sight: Ethics, Quality, and Equality Online Global Health Course
Unite For Sight supports eye clinics worldwide by investing human and financial resources in their social ventures to eliminate patient barriers to eye care. Unite For Sight applies best practices in eye care, public health, volunteerism, and social entrepreneurship to achieve our goal of high quality eye care for all. The online global health education modules apply best practice principles to ensure the maximum beneficial impact of any global health endeavor.
USAID Global Health eLearning Center
The Global Health eLearning Center developed by the USAID Bureau of Global Health is a response to repeated requests from field staff for access to technical public health information. We have heard from USAID Population, Health, and Nutrition officers (PHNs) and from Foreign Service Nationals (FSNs) that they want to be current on global health topics, yet find it a challenge to obtain the information because of logistical and time constraints. The Global Health eLearning Center provides Internet-based courses that:
- Provide useful and timely continuing education for health professionals
- Offer state-of-the-art technical content on key public health topics
- Serve as a practical resource for increasing public health knowledge
